Chemistry 12

Ionic 02

Electrochemical Cell (Galvanic, Voltaic)

Zn + 2AgNO3 → 2Ag + Zn(NO3)2
Zn0 + 2Ag+NO3- → 2Ag0 + Zn2+(NO3-)2

Zn0 - 2e- → Zn2+ (oxidized) LEO
Ag+ + 1e- → Ag0 (reduced) GER

Zinc Loses electrons to Ag+
Silver+ Gain electrons to become Ag0

"Change of solutions must be Neutral"

Reaction Half;
2Ag+ + 2e- → 2Ag0
Zn0 → Zn2+ + 2e-

Net Reaction;
Zn0 + 2Ag+ → Zn2+ + 2Ag0

W.O.A. = Weak Oxidized Agent
S.O.A. = Strong Oxidized Agent

W.R.A. = Weak Reduced Agent
S.R.A. = Strong Reduced Agent

Since Zin is the stronger R.A., it is oxized.

Electrolyicc Cell

2Na+Cl-(l) → 2Na0(l) + 212-(g)

+ ANODE (OX) 2Cl- → Cl2 + 2e-
- CATHODE (RED) 2Na + + 2e- → 2Na

1) Battery pushei e- to cathode(-)
2) Na+ pick up e-. conc. Na METAL(R)
3) Battery withdraw 5 e- from anode(+). conc. Cl- lose e-, conc. Cl0(o)
