Writing a Thesis Statement

A thesis statement is a clearly worded sentence written to state the focus, the idea, the theme or the intention of the academic paper which is written or presented.

Write one clear sentence only.

- Refer specifically to the topic to be discussed.
- Use only academic language. Never use personal pronouns in writing the thesis statement. (nor in any academic paper)

The Thesis Statement should be placed one page all by itself. Set up the page which will hold the thesis statement as follows:

This is a discussion of the author's use of two literary terms
a) Distance, and
b) Anthromorphosing; with included quptations from theliterature.


Place no other writing on that page. Do not number the thesis page.


* The order of pages in an Assignment is as follows:

1) Title Page
2) Thesis Page
3) All other pages of the assignment
4) A citation page if it is required


Use as the opening sentence
The Thesis Statement is used-also-as the opening sentence of the essay.
The thesis statement alerts the reader to the main idea of the essay and prepares the reader for the content that is to follow.
The thesis statement should clearly state the focus/theme/topic/idea or philosophy of the essay. It should be specific enough to clearly inform what the essay topis is. It can also be somewhat general.
There should be a connection all through the essay-in every paragraph-back to the original idea given in the opening thesis statement.

NOTE: As you work on your rough draft keep checking back to yout Thesis statement. Make sure to keep it connected to the rest of the essay. Keep the essay connected to it. You may need to edit your thesis statement as you work on your rough copy.
